A great blue heron (Ardea herodias) grey heron (Ardea cinerea) seen in Baden Baden, Germany on the Lichtentaler Allee.
Camera: Canon 1D MkIV
Exposure: 2/333
Aperture: f/5.6
Focal Length: 300mm
ISO: 1600
Update 10/18/11: Ruben Schoenefeld correctly pointed out that this was a grey heron rather than a great blue heron. Thanks Ruben!
Great shot. The Canon does amazing work at such high ISO. I wouldn’t try that with my camera. Well done.
Thanks Kris,
I had to push the ISO on this as the light was rapidly fading and the heron was standing just outside of shadow. At 5.6, it really needed higher ISO and it managed to pull through OK. Certainly much better than the last picture of a gb heron I got: http://prometheus.med.utah.edu/~bwjones/2006/09/great-blue-heron/
Or Grey Heron (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grey_Heron), which is at home in Europe? It’s a great shot. Seeing it on a picture is a lot less stressful than looking out the window to the pond behind the house just in time to see one of these guys eat all but two of your goldfish. Oh well, nature at its best.
Hrmmmm…. I suspect you are correct, especially after looking more carefully at the wing shoulders… Will make the change and thanks!
