I had a crazy quick trip to Birmingham, Alabama to visit with colleagues at UAB Ophthalmology, and give a talk. The trip was… interesting, and I’m looking forward to more conversations with them about science, and… things.
It was also notable that while I was there, the Alabama SCOTUS ruled that embryos used for IVF were persons, which predictably, shut down all IVF services in the state. This is what happens when you fail to think two steps down the road before doing something stupid.
Alabama citizens who want to have or grow their families can no longer do so because of Christofascism. I expect this will be altered in the not too distant future as the GOP is realizing that this is going to cost them votes. But it frustrates me to have to go through garbage like this and see real harm done to people’s lives because of stupidity.
We are quite used to behavior like this in Utah as every year, our legislature proposes laws that we end up having to defend in court and losing, all while wasting taxpayer dollars.
