These are rather unremarkable photographs from a technical or a compositional perspective, given they were made with digital zoom on my iPhone.  But they are also the first photographs I’ve ever made of sandhill cranes (Antigone canadensis), and it was also the closest I’ve ever been to a sandhill crane.  I was on my bike and without a good quality optical zoom lens, so made do with what I had… an iPhone.

Sandhill cranes  are one of the birds with the longest history in the fossil record, with examples being noted as long as 2.5 million years old.  That is back to the Pleistocene!  If you’ve ever heard a sandhill crane call, it is easy to imagine that they are dinosaurs.
