This is the imaging chamber of a transmission electron microscope, where you traditionally check for focus and centering of the image.  This is the view that traditional electron microscopists have seen for decades before taking the image on film. Nowadays, folks pretty much use digital imaging with digital cameras, and the really cutting edge stuff, like in my lab, automates these scopes to capture large scale digital images of neural tissues.
