My first visit to Stockholm, Sweden was made to deliver a talk at The Karolinska Instituet for Pete Williams, someone we are initiating a collaboration with.  My thanks to Pete for the invitation, and his hospitality, taking me first, to a place I’ve wanted to see since childhood, the Vasa Museum.  This place is a must go museum, and when I’m back in Stockholm, I will return.  I’d actually love to return sometime with a tripod and camera to get some shots that have been percolating in my brain.

At any rate, Pete has managed to surround himself with the most wonderful people, from his wife Hattie, to colleagues James Tribble and his wife, and author Louise, to his research assistant Amin Otmani, and colleagues Maria Nilsson and her husband Rune Brautaset.  It was a wonderful trip with delightful shared meals and solid discussion of science, and planned experiments.

Bonus: I also got to meet the author of the first hard core science papers I ever read, Ole Petter Ottersen.  His work immunolabeling glutamatergic and GABAergic neurons were fundamental to my scientific education.  Thank you Pete for organizing that visit which was supposed to be for shared drinks, but extended into dinner.

Stockholm itself is a wonderful city to visit, and from my limited time there, seems like a lovely place to live.  It is civilized, and home to some of the best food from a variety of cultures.  Folk & Friends served up a glorious wild boar pie and beer, and Mooncake served up some of the best Asian food I’ve ever had.   Kouzina served up delicious and honest, Greek food, and Matsu Sushi was a delightfully low key place, but served up a *delicious* lunch for the lab.

Stockholm travel tip: You don’t need cash. Wonderfully, it is a cash free economy.
