Looking At You

This is the macula and fovea of my left eye, as I would be looking at you through a rangefinder camera.  The fovea is a unique structure in primate retinas that is free of blood vessels and contains a high density of cone photoreceptors.  This is the structure that you position when you are looking directly at something or someone to ensure you bring the most photoreceptors to bear on the object of your attention.  There is a great chapter on the simple anatomy of the retina over on Webvision if you are interested in more.

This image was made with a high definition Zeiss, (Cirrus HD-OCT Model 5000) to look at the vasculature of retinas.
