This Northern flicker (Colaptes auratus) was seen on an Easter walk through the neighborhood today. These birds (male and female) are some of the most beautiful birds in the intermountain West.
I didn’t realize western flickers had different head markings than eastern birds until I saw your photo and did a little research. The males in my area have a red nape patch and black in the area where the bird in your photo has red. They also have less gray on the ventral neck.
Thanks for another good bird image. I learned something.
