While walking across the Stanford campus, I cut across the golf course and ran into this red tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) snacking on prey. I made this shot with the old Canon 500mm f/8 reflex lens I talked about here which is pretty impressive in its resolution.
This is a crop of the above image and I was stunned that you could even see the fly wings on the bird and in flight.
These are amazing birds with a call that is surprisingly loud. I sat under a tree for about 30 minutes and just watched as it fed on this squirrel and called to another red tailed hawk in the trees a short distance away. It is moments like this that make me glad I did not rent a car and just walked from point to point.
Nice lens – great detail on the flies. Your shutter speed even stopped a lot of the motion in the enlargement with the fly in flight.
That’s a nice combo to carry around when travelling. Do you have an adapter for Canon EF too?
I don’t have an adapter for the Canon EF mount… These lenses work better on mirrorless cameras.
Oh, that’s good to know.
