This is a focus stacked image with three separate exposures in separate focal planes combined to make for a more extended depth of field. Three is all I could get before the fly moved.

Thank you Maria! I actually made this photo quite a while ago when I first read about the possibility of focus stacking. The software was not there at the time, so busting these images out and using current algorithms was kinda fun.

There are a few options out there including Helicon’s Focus, the Extended Depth of Field plugin for ImageJ and Photoshop. I used Photoshop for this image.
