House Sparrow Some time was spent a couple of weeks ago out at the Great Salt Lake for H's Salt Lake Winter Training Series. These little events give me the opportunity to look for birds and while most of the migrating birds are further North, some bird watching down at the South end is possible. This day however was principally limited to watching bickering sparrows. Walking around Saltair, I initially thought that I was looking at cliff swallows (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) given the mud, jug-shaped houses that the birds were flying into and out of, but the call was different and as i got closer, it was apparent these were house sparrows (Passer domesticus). Unfortunately, the light was completely flat which has finally convinced me (also thanks to Ann) that I need a dedicated flash. ![]() Posted: Thu - March 1, 2007 at 10:04 AM |
