How about some nuclear fireworks for July 4th?  Interestingly we have a smooth, featureless sun (with my optical equipment at least) seen a few minutes ago on July 4th, 2017. No sunspots, at all which surprised me.  Apparently, our star the sun is in a period of the longest stretch with no sunspots since April 2010, indicating that the solar activity may be approaching a minimum.

I shot some sunspots some time ago to give you an idea of what they look like here.

  1. Inspired by your solar eclipse prep series, I have taken up the challenge of solar photography. I have found it difficult to determine when the image is in focus. When I get the images on the computer it seems hit or miss when it comes to a sharp image. Any hints on how best to do this using live view?

    1. Which camera are you using? One of my strategies is to use manual focus with focus peaking, zoom in on an edge of the sun and make sure it is at peak focus.
