I shot a portrait session with the author and surgeon, William Coles a couple weeks ago for a series of images that would be used for his book jackets, press and biographical materials.  The shoot was largely informal, but I wanted a somewhat professorial context which the Alta Club provided rather nicely.  Its a great building with an Arts and Crafts movement influenced interior and one that would be fun to explore more sometime.

For Bill’s shoot, we shot a series of images with a 3 light setup.  We used 2 off camera strobes shooting through umbrellas and a lovely big window as the main light source with strobes used to fill in shadows and even out the light.  The setup is shown below.

I also wanted a more serious shot with a wider environmental view that ended up being one of the last shots of the session.

  1. Nice shots Bryan. I’m surprised at how little reflection there is in the glasses, especially in the straight on shots. Did you do anything in post to remove any reflections?

    1. Thanks Bill,

There was almost no post-processing done to this. I worked pretty hard to make sure there were no reflections in the glasses by careful placement of the lights.
