Blood Moon

Blood Moon

A couple of nights ago we had a lunar eclipse, showing the blood moon visible over most of North and South America and fortunately, we had clear skies unlike many here in the US.  The red color comes from sunlight filtering through the Earth’s atmosphere, coloring the shadow a rust red color.

If you missed it this time, there are unusually three more opportunities in the coming months, October 8 2014 and  April 4 and September 28 of 2015.

Lunar-Eclipse

Here is a gif of half of the eclipse, up until the complete blood moon.  The reveal on the other side was pushing way too late in the morning as I had to get some sleep.  The funny thing however was watching all the really sleepy folks at the lab the next day.  You could almost predict who stayed up to watch the blood moon (or had newborns).
