Photos of Jun Yang for RPB

Research to Prevent Blindness does an annual report on researchers funded by the organization.  This year I was asked to photograph one of my colleagues at the Moran Eye Center, Jun Yang who is funded by RPB and doing amazing work in ciliopathies and how they impact blindness.  RPB prefers that the scientist not be looking into the camera which is too bad as I prefer the photo above to the other one we are also submitting, but my hopes are they go with the one above.

I know there are pretty strong feelings by some photographers about photographs that are off axis or not orthogonal to the plane of the Earth in that they find them unappealing or somehow blasphemous.  To them I say… tough beans.  I kinda like it and sometimes it works, so don’t restrict yourself to living in a 2D world.  Just because they want to live in Flatland does not mean the rest of us have to.

As an aside, I was fortunate enough to receive a career development award from RPB that has proven invaluable in providing flexible funding to chase and explore a number of interesting research prospects.  I encourage everyone to consider RPB for your donation dollars this holiday/end of tax year season as these unrestricted grants are some of the most powerful ways to get young faculty started and engaged in research that truly makes a difference in the lives of those who are suffering from blinding diseases.
