Personalized medicine and UROP

On March 24th I sat in on a personalized medicine seminar hosted by the governors office. On the panel were a number of notable folks here in the Utah economy including Daryll DeWald, Jerry Lanchbury, executive vice president of research at Myriad Genetics, Michael Paul, president and chief operating officer of LineaGen Research Corp., Lars Mouritsen, chief scientific officer at Sorenson Genomics, but I was disappointed to see Kevin Flanigan on the panel for a number of reasons that I won’t go into here.

The presentations were quick and everybody talked some about genetics, some about proteomics and even metabolomics got some lip service, but nobody ever really talks about how to integrate those disparate fields, so when I asked the question of how these individuals might propose going about bridging the disparate kinds of information brought about with genomics, proteomics and metabolomics and how they might start to commercialize those information channels, everybody simply stared at me until Daryl DeWald spoke up and attempted a reasonable response. I was most impressed with Daryll DeWald and we ended up talking after the conference for a couple of hours which resulted in a seminar that I will be giving next month up at USU’s Center for Center for Integrated Biosystems.

April 3rd was also the Undergraduate Research Projects Symposium, where two of our undergraduate students, Dave and Rebecca presented some of their work here in the lab. It went pretty well for them and it was good to meet their respective fiancees and family as well.

The rest of the month will be spent gearing up for Easter, a Centers of Excellence site visit, a computational science bio-imaging (NIH/NCRR Center for Integrated Biomedical Research) seminar I will be giving, a paper I have to get out and ARVO where we will be presenting three abstracts.
